What does the met guard protect against?

The external metatarsal guard covers the top of your foot, above the toe cap — the area a dropped tool or falling material would hit. It's hinged, so it flexes when you squat instead of digging in.

Is there protection underfoot too?

Yes. A metallic puncture-resistant plate runs under the foot to stop nails and sharp debris from coming up through the sole, backed by a fiberglass shank for structure.
